The CLEP American Literature Test

In order to determine how knowledgeable people are in the American literature, the College Board established what is known as the American Literature exam. This is done in the undergraduate level.

Passing the CLEP exams gives the opportunity to be credited by as much as three thousand colleges in America, which makes it possible to skip some necessary introductory exams.

However, to achieve this, you will need to excel in the American Literature test, which calls for enough preparation. Some of the topics you will need to be proficient in include the settings, plots, characters, as well as themes of given works of literature (covering between 46% and 60%), how to interpret short poems as well as excerpts from longer poems and works of prose (25% to 40%). Between 10% and 15% of the American Literature Exam deals with the social and historical settings of particular authors and their works as well as the connection between traditions and literary works, while 5% is concerned with how to understand critical theories of literary terms, verse forms, and American writers.

The American Literature exam is usually divided into sections that cover various eras in this manner:

* 10%-15% - The colonial era (1620-1830)
* 25% - The Romantic era (1830-1870)
* 25% - The naturalism and realism era (1870-1910)
* 25% - The modernist era (1910-1945)
* 10%-15% - The contemporary era (1945 to date)

The American Literature exam contains 100 questions of multiple-choice format, and they must be completed within ninety minutes. Some institutions include an essay section, which is optional.

On completion of the American Literature exam, an unofficial score report will be released, which is graded between 20 and 80. You need to score at least 50 in order to pass, which is the raw score adjusted depending on how difficult the version is.

You are able to take the American Literature exam either on paper or through computer. If you want to register, go to the College Board site.
