The CLEP Exam in Chemistry

One of the CLEP examinations that have been implemented by the US College Board, which help those joining colleges to skip some entry exams since they are credited by more than 3,000 colleges in the country, is the chemistry exam. The Chemistry exam aims at determining someone's skills in the subject at the undergraduate level.

There are a number of topics that you need to be proficient in if you would like to excel in the Chemistry exam. They include recalling particular facts; understanding concepts & the conversion of information to equivalent terms; demonstration of strong understanding of information & being familiar with relevant terminology; solving problems in chemistry through mathematics; knowledge application in unfamiliar situations; reaching conclusions by integrating information; recognizing unstated assumptions; and using available data to make inferences.

There are several categories into which the chemistry exam is divided.

* 20% - Structure of matter
* 19% - States of matter
* 14% - descriptive chemistry
* 12% - Types of reaction
* 10% - Stoichiometry
* 9% - Experimental chemistry
* 7% - Equilibrium
* 5% - thermodynamics
* 4% - Kinetics

This exam, which takes one and a half hours, is made up of 75 multiple-choice questions. It is advisable to complete all the questions for a couple of reasons. First of all, unanswered questions are treated as incorrect ones. Second, there are some pre-test questions that do not add to the total raw score, and it is not easy to differentiate them from the rest. Such tests are used to develop future exams. The total score is calculated from the number of correct answers that are adjusted as per the exam's difficulty. In order to pass the chemistry exam, you will need to have at least 50.
